From Intermediate to Native-Level: My Journey Through English Proficiency Tests
English proficiency tests are often a great way to measure where you stand in terms of language skills, and my experience has been quite a journey! Over the past few months, I've taken multiple tests that have helped me track my progress from intermediate to upper-intermediate, and now, towards advanced levels. Let me walk you through my experiences and scores, and how these tests have played a role in my language development.
Intermediate
Intermediate Level: Almost Ready for B2!
I started my language testing journey at the intermediate level. The test was mainly focused on adverb placement in sentences, present perfect tense, and completing sentences with the right word choice. Out of 15 questions, I scored 14/15—a near-perfect score! This gave me a sense of accomplishment and confirmed that I was on track to move on to a more advanced level.
At this stage, I felt confident in my basic understanding of English grammar, especially with tenses and sentence structures. The challenge here was making sure I could use those rules naturally and accurately in context.
Upper-Intermediate
Upper-Intermediate: Stepping Closer to C1
The upper-intermediate test was a bit trickier. It focused on more complex language skills like present continuous tense, prefix usage, phrasal verbs, and understanding nuances in meaning. I scored 13/15, which means I passed this level and was ready to continue toward C1—just one level away from advanced proficiency!
This stage was all about fine-tuning my understanding of English. I had to pay closer attention to the subtle differences between similar words, and learn how to describe actions or situations with even more precision. The addition of phrasal verbs and prefixes made the test more challenging, but it was also where I noticed the most growth in my vocabulary and sentence structure.
Advanced
Advanced: Nearly at Native-Speaker Level
Now, at the advanced level, the test had a more complex set of challenges, focusing on areas like third conditional sentences, articles (a/an/the), and advanced sentence structure. I scored 13/15 once again, indicating that I’m getting closer to native-speaker proficiency.
This test was a significant step forward. The questions involved making sure every sentence was grammatically correct and understanding the deeper meanings behind complex sentences. My understanding of tenses, especially the present perfect, was tested, as well as my ability to distinguish between words that have similar meanings but different uses in context.
At this level, I felt like I was getting closer to thinking in English, as opposed to translating from my first language. It’s also where I could start to identify and correct my mistakes more easily, making my communication in English smoother and more natural.
What’s Next?
With these tests behind me, I feel confident about my progress in mastering English. From intermediate to upper-intermediate and now advanced, each stage has allowed me to build on my strengths and work on my weaknesses. But the journey doesn't stop here! Reaching a score close to a native-speaker level means there’s always room for improvement. I’ll continue to practice and engage with English content to sharpen my skills and eventually reach that elusive fluency.
For anyone looking to improve their language skills, these tests have been incredibly helpful in giving me benchmarks and goals to work towards. If you’re aiming for fluency, it’s all about consistency and challenging yourself at each level. Keep learning, keep testing, and most importantly—keep using English!
This has been my language journey so far, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next. Whether you're just starting or you're well on your way to mastering English, remember: progress is progress, no matter how big or small! Keep pushing forward!
